Hide My Email Not Forwarding? Find the Missing Mail

If Hide My Email is not forwarding, check these five things in order:

  1. The address is inactive, so mail goes back to the sender.
  2. It’s a Sign in with Apple address, and that app’s Forward To switch is off.
  3. Forward To points at an inbox you no longer read.
  4. The mail is in Junk, Spam, a category or tab, or a rule moved it.
  5. Gmail or Outlook is filtering the forwarded copy.

If mail reaches iCloud Mail but not Gmail, the most direct fix is to choose your iCloud Mail address under Forward To and read that mail in Apple Mail, or to add iCloud Mail to the Gmail app. The two-minute test below shows which of the five applies. For new signups, CatchNone avoids the problem altogether: nothing is forwarded, and each message appears under the alias it reached, on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Menu paths below were checked on September 25, 2026, against Apple’s guides for iOS 27, macOS Golden Gate 27, and iCloud.com. For how the feature works, why the option can be missing, and how to turn an address off, see our Hide My Email guide.

Start here: the two-minute test

First, look at the address. If it ends in @privaterelay.appleid.com or @private.icloud.com, or came from signing in to an app with Apple, skip this test. Apple forwards only mail from senders that app has registered, so a test from your own account bounces even when forwarding works. Ask the app to email you again, for example with a new sign-in code, and see Sign in with Apple addresses.

For a Hide My Email address:

  1. Copy the address. On iPhone, go to Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Hide My Email, tap the address, then touch and hold the Hide My Email section and tap Copy.
  2. Send it a message from a different account than the one it forwards to, with a real subject and a line of text. No second account? Use a work address or ask someone to send it. Gmail treats messages with an empty body or subject as suspicious (Google), so don’t send a blank test.
  3. Wait a few minutes, then look in the Forward To inbox, including Spam or Junk and any categories or tabs.
  4. Check the sending account for a bounce message.
  5. If nothing arrives and nothing bounces, change Forward To to your iCloud Mail address (steps below) and send a second test.
  6. If a test arrives in Gmail, click the Down arrow under the sender’s name. “Mailed by” and “Signed by” mean it passed Gmail’s authentication checks (Google). More → Show original shows the full headers (Google); on iCloud.com, it’s More → Show All Headers.

Is the address active?

Hide My Email addresses

Mail sent to an inactive address is returned to the sender, not held for you (Apple). To check and reactivate:

  • iPhone (iOS 27): Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Hide My Email. Active addresses are listed below Create New Address. If yours isn’t there, it may be inactive. Apple’s iPhone guide doesn’t document reactivating, so use iCloud.com or a Mac.
  • iCloud.com: go to icloud.com/icloudplus, select Hide My Email, and scroll to the bottom. Inactive addresses sit under “[number] inactive email address(es)”. Select one, then select Reactivate address.
  • Mac (macOS Golden Gate 27): System Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Hide My Email, click the Options button in the lower-left corner, then Show Inactive Addresses. Select the address, click Reactivate Address, then Reactivate (Apple).

Don’t delete an inactive address you might need again. Deletion is permanent, and a deleted address can’t be reactivated.

Sign in with Apple addresses

If you chose Hide My Email while signing in to an app with Apple, the address usually ends in @privaterelay.appleid.com (Apple’s developer documentation also lists @private.icloud.com and @icloud.com). These addresses have their own Forward To switch. When it’s off, Apple’s relay rejects every later message, and because one address serves all apps from the same developer, the switch covers all of them (Apple). To check it on iPhone (iOS 27):

  1. Go to Settings → [your name] → Sign in with Apple.
  2. Tap the app, then tap Manage Hide My Email.
  3. Tap the app again and check that Forward To is on.

If you don’t see Manage Hide My Email, Apple’s support article gives another route to the app’s switch: Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Hide My Email (in the iCloud+ Features section), then the app or developer.

Where does Hide My Email forward to?

Every iCloud+ Hide My Email address forwards to one address: your iCloud Mail address or another address on your Apple Account. You can change it at any time (Apple). Make sure it’s an inbox you still read, not an old work or school address.

  • iPhone (iOS 27): Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Hide My Email, scroll to the bottom, tap Forward To, and choose an address.
  • Mac (macOS Golden Gate 27): System Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Hide My Email, click the Options button, then Change Forwarding Address. Select the address and click Done.
  • iCloud.com: icloud.com/icloudplus → Hide My Email, then the “Forward to” section, below your active addresses and above your inactive ones.
  • Sign in with Apple apps (iOS 27): Apple’s iPhone guide also lists Settings → [your name] → Sign-In & Security → Forward To, then Save (Apple). Apple’s support article says the main Forward To covers these apps too (Apple), so check both.

No iCloud Mail address in the list? You haven’t created one yet. On iPhone, go to Settings → [your name] → iCloud, tap iCloud Mail (or Mail), and follow the onscreen instructions, or go to icloud.com/mail and select Create Email Address. You can’t rename that address later (Apple).

To forward to another address that isn’t listed, add it to your Apple Account first (Apple):

  1. Sign in at account.apple.com.
  2. Select Sign-In & Security, then Email & Phone Numbers.
  3. Select Add, enter the address, then enter the verification code Apple sends to it. It can’t already belong to another Apple Account.
  4. Go back to Forward To (above) and choose the new address.

Look in the destination inbox

If Forward To is iCloud Mail

  • Junk. Mail from your contacts or recent conversations stays out of Junk, and messages in Junk are deleted automatically after 30 days (Apple).
  • Categories. Mail on iPhone can sort messages into Primary, Transactions, Updates, and Promotions. Swipe left on the categories to open All Mail (Apple).
  • iCloud Mail Cleanup. It can unsubscribe you from senders in bulk and move their future messages to the Trash. Look in Trash, then check Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Mail → iCloud Mail Cleanup → Unsubscribed. To undo, tap Edit there, then tap the Delete button next to the sender (Apple).
  • Rules. iCloud Mail Rules can move, delete, or forward mail. They’re at Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Mail → iCloud Mail Rules, or Settings → Rules in Mail on iCloud.com, and changes can take up to 15 minutes to apply (Apple).
  • A second forward. If “Forward my email to” is on under Mail Forwarding in Mail on iCloud.com, your Hide My Email mail is forwarded again (Apple). Turn it off, or make sure it points at an inbox you read.
  • Storage and size. With full iCloud storage you can’t receive iCloud Mail, and as of September 2026 incoming iCloud Mail messages are limited to 20 MB (Apple).
  • Filter. In Mail on iCloud.com, select the Filter Emails button above the email list, select the current filter, then choose Only Hide My Email (Apple).

If Forward To is Gmail

  • Tabs. Check Promotions, Updates, Social, and Forums as well as Primary (Google).
  • Search everywhere. Search in:anywhere plus the subject or sender’s name to include Spam and Trash (Google). If the message is in Spam, mark it as not spam.
  • Blocks and filters. Mail from a blocked sender goes to Spam (Google), and a filter can archive, delete, or forward messages. Both live under Settings → See all settings → Filters and Blocked Addresses (Google).
  • Storage. As of September 2026, Gmail’s free 15 GB is shared with Drive and Photos, and going over it can affect receiving (Google).

If Forward To is Outlook.com

Look in Junk Email, then add the sender to Safe Senders (Microsoft), using the sender address exactly as it appears on the forwarded message.

Hide My Email not forwarding to Gmail or Outlook

Hide My Email can forward to Gmail or Outlook only if that address is on your Apple Account and chosen under Forward To. When Forward To is iCloud Mail, the message stays inside Apple’s system. When it’s Gmail or Outlook, the message is judged twice: Apple applies standard spam filtering to Hide My Email mail (Apple), then Gmail or Outlook runs its own checks on the forwarded copy.

Why Hide My Email messages go to junk

Forwarding can break SPF (RFC 7208) and DKIM, the checks mail services use to confirm a sender. Google says forwarded messages often fail SPF, that Gmail does its own authentication check on them, and that messages that fail DKIM are more likely to go to spam (Google).

Apple doesn’t document how its relay handles these checks, so there’s no single cause to name. A message Apple rejects never reaches you at all; only the sender gets the bounce.

The most direct fix

  1. Read Hide My Email mail at iCloud. Choose your iCloud Mail address under Forward To, creating one first if you need to (see above). This removes the extra forwarding step and shows the mail in Mail on iCloud.com, where Apple’s reply steps work. iCloud still has its own junk filter, so the iCloud Mail checks above still apply.
  2. Use Gmail as the app, not the destination. The Gmail app for iPhone, iPad, and Android can add iCloud Mail and show it with your Gmail under All inboxes; as of September 2026 you can add up to five addresses (Google). Google is removing “Send as” for third-party addresses in January 2027, but says you can keep adding and using non-Google accounts in the Gmail mobile app (Google). Gmail on the web can’t fetch iCloud Mail. iCloud Mail has no POP, and Google’s POP fetching and Gmailify stopped taking new users after the first quarter of 2026 and end in January 2027 (Google).
  3. Use Outlook or another mail app. Add your iCloud account there. Depending on the app, you sign in with your Apple Account or use an app-specific password, as our iCloud app-specific password guide explains.

Hide My Email reply not working? Which account to use

Reply from Mail on iPhone or from Mail on iCloud.com: those are the two places Apple documents. On iPhone, open the message, tap the Reply button, then tap Reply; tap the From field to see the address the recipient will see (Apple). On iCloud.com, the mail has to be in iCloud Mail, because Mail on iCloud.com shows Hide My Email mail only when Forward To is your iCloud Mail address or a custom-domain address (Apple).

If a reply fails or shows the wrong address, check these:

  • Reply All or extra recipients. A message sent with Hide My Email can go to one recipient only (Apple).
  • You replied from Gmail or Outlook. Apple’s overview says replies keep your personal address private (Apple), but it doesn’t say what happens when you reply from Gmail or Outlook. Test it before you rely on it: send your Hide My Email address a message from another address you own, reply from Gmail, and check the From and Reply-To lines that arrive.

Hide My Email not receiving emails from one site

If your test arrives but one site’s mail never does, look at the sender’s side.

  • The site stopped sending. Reactivating an address doesn’t always bring a sender back. Apple and Google both tell bulk senders to remove addresses that bounce consistently, and Apple asks them not to reactivate addresses already on their suppression list (Apple, Google). So a shop or newsletter that got a run of bounces while the address was off may have stopped mailing it for good. That’s our reading, not something Apple or Google says. Check the email address on your account at the site, or ask its support team to send again.
  • Unregistered senders (Sign in with Apple only). Apple forwards only mail from addresses or domains the developer has registered and authenticated with SPF or DKIM. Mail from anything else bounces (Apple Developer). If one app’s codes never arrive while other apps’ mail does, suspect this. Only the developer can fix it, so ask the app’s support to register their sending domain for Apple’s private email relay.
  • The daily limit (Sign in with Apple only). As of September 2026, each private relay address can take 100 emails a day, counting the app’s messages and your replies (Apple Developer).

The private.icloud.com change isn’t a delivery problem

As of September 25, 2026. Apple’s 2026 domain change doesn’t stop an existing address from forwarding. Hide My Email addresses stay on icloud.com, existing @privaterelay.appleid.com addresses keep working, and only new Sign in with Apple addresses move to private.icloud.com, starting later this year (Apple Developer). If a signup form rejects one, that’s the site, not forwarding. Our Hide My Email guide explains what changed with the domain in 2026.

When it’s Apple’s problem

Check Apple’s System Status page first. It has no Hide My Email row, so look at iCloud Mail, Sign in with Apple, iCloud Web Apps (iCloud.com), and Apple Account. Apple’s advice is to contact iCloud Support if multiple messages are delayed, bounced, or not delivered (Apple). You can reach it in the Apple Support app or at getsupport.apple.com. Have this ready:

  • the address, and whether it came from Hide My Email or from signing in to an app with Sign in with Apple (those usually end in @privaterelay.appleid.com);
  • whether it’s active, your current Forward To address, and whether iCloud+ (yours or your Family Sharing group’s) is still active;
  • the date, time, time zone, and sending address of your test message;
  • the full text of any bounce the sender got, including its three-digit code;
  • whether the test arrives when Forward To is your iCloud Mail address;
  • the full headers of a message that did arrive.

Apple’s postmaster address, icloudadmin@apple.com, is for mail-server administrators. Apple tells everyone else to use Apple Support.

A separate inbox for new signups

CatchNone is a separate, receive-only inbox for new signups, so there’s no forwarding to break. Each shop or newsletter gets its own alias, and each message is badged with the alias it reached, in one app on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. On a domain you already own, it reads the mailbox read-only over IMAP or JMAP, directly from your device, so that mail never passes through CatchNone’s servers; an iCloud+ custom domain with catch-all can be read this way with an app-specific password. With Premium, you can also use random @catchnone.com addresses, with no domain, DNS, or mailbox to set up; CatchNone’s own service receives them and keeps each message for 30 days.

CatchNone has no connection to Hide My Email and can’t read, manage, or repair those addresses. It reads only the inbox, so mail your provider files as junk doesn’t appear, and it never sends or replies, so keep Hide My Email for accounts where you reply. CatchNone is available for iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

FAQ

Why aren’t verification codes reaching my Hide My Email address?

Check Spam, Junk, Promotions, and All Mail, then run the two-minute test and request a fresh code. For a Sign in with Apple address, the app’s sender may not be registered with Apple, which only the developer can fix.

Do Apple Pay addresses forward differently?

No. An address you create in the Apple Pay payment sheet is an ordinary Hide My Email address with the same Forward To. Apple reuses it for later purchases from that app or website (Apple), so deactivating it affects every later order from that merchant.

Will my addresses keep forwarding if I cancel iCloud+?

Apple says that if you downgrade to 5 GB of storage, you lose access to iCloud+ features (Apple). It also says Hide My Email is available if someone in your Family Sharing group has an iCloud+ subscription (Apple). Its documentation doesn’t say what happens to forwarding on addresses you already have. Before you downgrade, move the accounts that matter to an address you’ll keep; our guide to how many email accounts you should have covers which address to use for what.
